Abbiamo scoperto Tony Succar dopo la sua pubblicazione della cover di
"Thriller". Colpiti dalla grandissima fantasia con cui aveva arrangiato il più
significativo successo di MJ abbiamo voluto seguire molto attentamente lo
sviluppo del progetto "UNITY" e dopo la pubblicazione del trailer e di "I Want
You Back" il nostro interesse verso questo eclettico musicista e diventato quasi
maniacale.
Siamo tutti innamorati di MJ e credo che persino il grandissimo Quincy Jones
dopo aver ascoltato gli arrangiamenti di Tony avrà come noi sorriso compiaciuto
nell’assaporare l’estro e la fantasia con cui Tony è riuscito a creare un
naturale connubio tra la musica del re del pop e il travolgente flow latino.
A pochi giorni dall’uscita dell’album tributo a Michel Jackson, che
vede riuniti alcuni dei più grandi artisti latini in un progetto chiamato
Unity, abbiamo contattato l’ideatore di questa iniziativa, Tony Succar,
sia per avere alcune anticipazioni, sia per sapere un po’ come è nato e si è
sviluppato questo progetto. Ne è nata un’intervista a distanza dalla quale
abbiamo potuto scoprire come il sogno di un giovane produttore si è tramutato in
splendida realtà, grazie alla tenacia, al credere nella propria idea e all’amore
per la musica e l’arte del compianto Re del Pop.
– Ciao Tony, innanzitutto come va? –
Alla grande, ma sono stanchissimo. Sto lavorando quasi 20 ore al giorno per gli
ultimi dettagli del disco.
– Un disco che vedrà reinterpretati in chiave latina alcuni dei più grandi
successi di Michael Jackson. Che legame c’è tra la musica del Re del pop e
quella latina? –
– Il legame è l’Africa. Ci sono molte altre influenze, sia nella musica di
Michael, sia in quella latina, ma la radice comune è l’Africa. Perché ascoltando
la musica di Mj e la musica latina viene subito voglia di ballare? La clave,
presente nella musica latina, è come la "key" (che in inglese ha lo stesso
significato) che tutti noi musicisti seguiamo quando suoniamo. Io, quando
ascolto la musica di Michael e lo sento cantare, sento che ha clave, per questo
è stato naturale per me scrivere questi arrangiamenti. Non mi piacciono le
forzature, se la musica di Mj non si fosse adattata naturalmente allo stile
latino, avrei sicuramente lasciato perdere, ma avendo constatato quanto sia
naturale l’accostamento, allora mi sono buttato a capofitto nel progetto. –
– Tutto deriva dal fatto che sei un grande fan di Michael Jackson e della sua
musica. Quando hai iniziato a pensare a questo progetto e quanto tempo ti ci è
voluto per coinvolgere gli artisti, i musicisti e portare avanti il discorso? –
Ora sono arrivato quasi al quarto anno e non l’ho ancora finito del tutto!
Quello che ho fatto in questi anni può essere comparato a quello che fa uno
studente quando prende la licenzia media, si diploma alle superiori e poi
partecipa alle olimpiadi di matematica! L’idea di rendere omaggio a un artista
come Michael mi è balenata fin dal giorno dopo che ci ha lasciati (una notizia
che ha devastato me e milioni di fans nel mondo…è ancora difficile credere che
lui non sia più qui tra noi). Ho così iniziato a scrivere gli arrangiamenti e a
cercare i fondi per dare il via al progetto (ho dovuto farlo in modo
indipendente, e non avevo molti soldi sul mio conto corrente….ero un
normalissimo musicista di Miami che lavorava due sere a settimana nei locali
dove si suona e si balla salsa); in seguito ho contattato i manager di molti
artisti, dando loro i miei arrangiamenti con la speranza che piacessero e che
loro saltassero a bordo. Questo ha portato via un intero anno. Ero quasi sul
punto di mollare, ma quando un primo artista è rimasto impressionato dalla
musica ed ha dato il suo ok….bam!…si è creato l’effetto domino. Grazie a
Dio!
Poi è arrivata la parte più difficile del progetto, ottenere le licenze per
risuonare la musica di Michael. ci sono voluti altri due anni! Poi loghi, video
di presentazione, sito internet e quant’altro….A volte mi guardo alle spalle e
non riesco a credere di aver superato tutte queste prove, ma la soddisfazione è
enorme. Mi sento come se avessi la vera visione di Michael, che è quello per cui
mi batto. Massima qualità ed un messaggio positivo, questo è il mio scopo….
Oh, quasi dimenticavo il processo di registrazione! Più di novanta musicisti vi
hanno partecipato. Abbiamo registrato negli studi di Miami, Orlando, New Jersey,
New York, Los Angeles, Puerto Rico, Texas e Perù, un’esperienza eccezionale.
Tutti veramente uniti per questo progetto, è stato bellissimo vedere quanto sia
stato potente il messaggio di Michael e quanta ammirazione per la sua musica noi
tutti abbiamo avuto.
– Chi sono i cantanti e i musicisti di Unity? –
Per quanto riguarda i musicisti, la lista è lunghissima, fareste prima a leggerla sul libretto del cd, che avrà 24 pagine. Gli artisti sono Tito
Nieves, India, Kevin Ceballo, Jan, Jon Secada, Jennifer Peña,
Obie Bermudez, Michael Stuart.
– Parliamo della tracklist: l’hai scelta da solo o ti sei consultato con gli
artisti coinvolti? –
L’ho scelta da solo, durante il processo degli arrangiamenti. All’epoca non
sapevo quanto sarebbe diventato grande questo progetto, o quanti e quali artisti
sarei riuscito a coinvolgere, così ho iniziato da solo, come fan di MJ…Uno
degli artisti però mi ha sottoposto una richiesta speciale, dopo che avevo
finito di registrare: You Are Not Alone, una canzone
così speciale per lui che ho dovuto farla…e lui l’ha cantata assieme al
figlio. Non vi dico il nome dell’artista, si tratta di una sorpresa!
– Che criteri di scelta hai usato per le canzoni? –
Ho scelto le canzoni che sentivo avessero un forte messaggio, un messaggio che
Michael voleva che il mondo capisse…Black or White, Earth Song, They
Don’t Care About Us, Man In The Mirror. Michael era veramente una
persona di cuore, quello che ci ha lasciato durerà per sempre.
– Tutte le canzoni sono in versione salsa o ci sono anche altri generi? –
Ci sono anche altri generi ed altre influenze al di fuori del panorama latino.
– Qual è stata la canzone più difficile da arrangiare con i ritmi latini? –
A dire il vero nessuna è stata veramente difficile, sono andate a posto quasi
naturalmente…se qualcosa è troppo difficile da essere fatta in musica, allora
non è naturale…e questo non è il mio stile. La difficoltà maggiore è stata
l’orchestrazione, perché confrontarsi, o anche solo avvicinarsi a quello che fa
Quincy Jones è impossibile, ma ho fatto del mio meglio per renderlo
orgoglioso. Adoro Quincy, sono un suo super fan!
– Dopo l’uscita dei primi singoli, qual è stato il feedback del pubblico e
dei media negli Stati Uniti? –
Il feedback è stato super-favoloso! L’ho analizzato e ora sono pronto a lanciare
l’intero album. Ho fatto uscire i due singoli senza una particolare promozione,
solo con il passaparola ed i social media, perché volevo la sincera reazione dei
fans di Michael e…grazie da Dio, è stata super positiva. E’ una bellissima
sensazione che la gente abbia apprezzato questo tributo. ora stiamo per lanciare
l’album, sicuri di mostrare al mondo cosa Mj significhi ancora per tutti noi.
Persino noi latini!
– Sarà possibile, in un futuro non lontano, vedere gli artisti di Unity tutti
insieme in un concerto dal vivo o in un tour? –
Certo! Stiamo ricevendo tantissime richieste per uno spettacolo, è incredibile.
Mentre vi scrivo, stiamo programmando il tutto. L’aspetto musicale, di cui mi
sono occupato in prima persona è molto importante, ma in questo caso sto
formando una squadra che si occupa anche dell’aspetto scenico e visuale dello
show. Vogliamo che questa sia la definitiva esperienza latina di Michael
Jackson, su tutti i livelli: musicali, visuali, ed emozionali. E’ tutta una
questione di feeling, di energia positiva. Stiamo già facendo le prove, la band
è già "calda". Abbiamo già fatto un’esibizione unplugged all’università
internazionale della Florida ed è stato un successone! (Qui sotto potete

We first met Tony Succar’s work after we listened to his Thriller
cover. Impressed by his great creativity into arranging one of the most
succesful songs of Michael Jackson, we decided to follow the Unity
project process closer. After the release of the project teaser and I Want
You Back, our interest towards this eclectic musician has almost become
maniacal.
We all love Michael Jackson and I think even Quincy Jones have smiled
pelased, appreciating Tony’s fancy and the imagination in creating a match among
the King of Pop music and the overwhelming Latin flow.
The release of Unity Project, the Latin tribute to Michael Jackson, will be in a
few days. Some of the greatest latin artists pay their homenage to the greatest
pop artist ever.
In these days we contacted the young man who created and put together the whole
project, Mr Tony Succar: We asked him some questions about Unity and some
anticipations about the album. During the intrview we have discovered how a
young producer’s dream has become true, thanks to his tenacity,his faith and his
love for the music and the art of the King of Pop
Hi Tony, first, How are you?
Great, but extremely tired! Been working really hard for this release! I
literally have been working 20 hours a day non stop!
In this record we will listen some of the greatest hits of Michael Jackson in
latin version. What is the relationship between the music Latin music and King
of Pop music?
The relationship is AFRICA. Ok, might sound random to some people, and yes,
there is A LOT more influence than just Africa in MJ’s music and Latin music…
but the root of both of them is Africa… Why do you think both MJ and Latin Music
make you want to dance?
The clave, which is in Latin Music, it’s like the key (hence, Clave is Spanish
for “key”) that all of us musicians follow when playing music. For me, when I
listen to Michael’s music, and listen to him sing, I feel like it has clave as
well… that’s why it was natural for me to write these arrangements. I don’t like
to force anything, and if MJ’s music wouldn’t of fit naturally into the latin
style I would have quit for sure… but because of how natural it was, I knew
people we’re going to dig!
You started this project because you are a big fan of Michael Jackson Music.
How long ago you did you start to think about it and how long did it take to
involve the artists, musicians, and run the project ?
I am now going into year 4!! And I still haven’t launched! This has been the
most difficult task I’ve ever come across with. Graduate school, College, High
School, and math honors society competitions doesn’t compare to what I had to go
through these past 4 years!
It’s been a crazy process…. Starting with just an inspiration (MJ’s passing
devasted me, yes… like the whole world… it’s still difficult to think that he’s
not here anymore) … then an idea to pay tribute to Michael as a gratitude to
what he left us all… then write the arrangements, then raise funds on
kickstarter (I had to do this all independently, and I didn’t have much $ in my
bank account… I was a ordinary humble musician from Miami working a couple of
nights a week at local salsa clubs)… then contact artist managers to hope they
could deliver the music to the artists so they can jump on board (this took
almost 12 months!), I almost gave up at one point…but all it took was for one of
the artists to listen to the music, and bam… it was a domino effect! Thank God!
Then after, the licenses… that was the most difficult part of the journey, to
get the licenses to re-record the music, another 2 years Just in this process…
Then videos, branding, logos, etc… Sometimes I look back and I really can’t
believe I went through all of this, but it feels great… I feel like I stayed
true Michael’s vision, which is what I strive for. Quality to the max and a
positive message… from the heart, that’s my focus.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention the recording process! More than 90 musicians
participated in the project! From all over… we recorded in studios in Miami,
Orlando, New Jersey, New York, Los Angeles, Puerto Rico, Texas, and Peru… was an
amazing experience! Everyone really united for this project, it was amazing to
see how powerful his message is and how much admiration we all have for his
music.

Let’s talk about the track list: did you choose it all by yourself, or did
you made a brainstorm with singers and musicians involved?
I chose them by myself… This was during my arrangement process.. I didn’t know
this project was going to be so big, or what musicians would be involved, or
artists… so I began all on my own, as a MJ fan … One of the artists submitted a
special request, which is the song You Are Not Alone ,this was
after I had finished recording… the song was so special to him that I had to do
it… and he sang it with his son… was an amazing experience.
I won’t mention which artist it is, it’s a surprise!
If you chose the playlist by yourself, which choice criterions did you use?
I chose the songs that I felt had strong messages, the messages he wanted the
world to understand… Black or White, Earth Song, They Don’t Care About Us,
Man in the Mirror… you get me? Michael was such a good hearted person,
his legacy will live forever!
All the songs of the playlist will be salsa versions, or there will be other
genres?
There are other genres! And lots of influences outside of the tropical realm!
Which was the most difficult song to put in latin rythms?
Hmmm… None were really too difficult, they kind of all fell in to place
naturally… if something is too difficult to do in music, then its not natural…
that’s not my style I mean, it was difficult to orchestrate !because to match or
come close to what Quincy Jones does is pretty impossible , but I did my best to
make him proud! I love Quincy, I’m a super fan!
After the first two singles released, how was the feedback of the audience
and of the media in the US?
Feedback was super amazing! I took that feedback, analyzed it, and now I’m ready
to launch the big album! I released it with hardly any promotion, just word of
mouth social media, because I wanted to the truthful reaction of the public, of
the MJ fans… and all, thank God, was super positive… and its an amazing feeling
that people are enjoying this tribute. Now we’re going to launch with a big
bang, make sure that we show the world how much MJ still means to all of us!
Even us latinos!
Is it possible in a future not so far to see all the Unity Project artists
together in a live concert or in a tour?
OH YES! We are getting so many inquiries for the show, it’s crazy! We are lining
everything up as I write this ! The musical aspect I’m done with, because that’s
what I do..but I’m teaming up with some amazing visionaries in the stage show
realm to add an amazing visual aspect to this show. We want this to be the
ultimate Michael Jackson LATIN Experience, on all levels! Musically, visually,
and emotionally… It’s all about feeling baby, energy!
We have already been rehearsing… and musically , the band is smoking’! we did an
unplugged performance at a TED talk at Florida International University and it
was a slam, check it out!
